We DID it!

Juliann and I right after!

Mile 12
(Juliann is still smiling)

YES, WE ROCK!

It's official Juliann, Em and I completed a half marathon,
and we did
AWESOME!

We all worked hard to train for this day. Even despite Em's knee injury, Juliann's migraines, and my concussion the week before we were able to waste the goals that I had set. (Juliann just wanted to finish the race, but I wanted to break 2 hours)

We all three went down to Laguna Hills the night before to stay in a hotel so that we could make sure to get a good night of sleep and so that we would not have to wake up as early on race day.

We were so excited to be free of kids and to be in a hotel. We even jumped on the beds! We had a delicious dinner of Cafe Rio to carb up and even took a dip in the hot tub before going to bed early.

We were not able to get the great night of sleep as planned. Juliann didn't fall asleep until 2:30 am and I was wide awake at 4:30am. I guess we were just too anxious and nervous to sleep.

We got to the starting line and the race began. There were 5,000 runners so it was hard to get going because there were so many people. It reminded me of back in the day when I use to swim races in a lake and the starts were brutal. People would be swimming on top of each other and people would pull you back with each stroke. I remember looking at my watch at mile one and our time said 10:45!! We couldn't run our normal pace with all the people! To break 2 hours we needed to be holding an average pace of 9 min miles. How were we now going to make that up??? After a couple of miles were were finally able to weed through the masses of people and find our pace. By mile 4 we had already made up for the first mile. We were doing great.

At around mile 6 after a hill we were met by Dan, Jade, Lisa, and Josh!! They offered us drinks and candy(pop rocks and lemon heads). None of us felt like eating any candy. But, just seeing little Jade gave me even more energy. I was feeling great and didn't even start to feel tired until mile 9 and even then I felt I could go a lot more.

At around mile 9 we saw Dan and the gang again. This time they had spray bottles and cooled us down. It felt great.

Juliann had the chicken dance song stuck in her head for all 13 miles!! I'm sure people hated running near us because even at mile 13 we were just chatting away. We talked about all the gifts Jade got for her birthday and talked about Juliann's cruise that she is about to go on.

At mile 12 Dan had another surprise for us!!! He mooned us and on his bum was written
GO!HAHA it was pretty funny.
(Sorry that you had to see that Juliann)

Around that time I knew that not only would we break 2 hours but we would be well under. It felt good to know that we would not need to sprint into the finish line to make my goal. The last stretch was up a hill and we raced in and finished together with a finishing time of 1:55:59!!
WE ROCK! I got 12th out of my age group of 67 and Juliann got 21st of 92 in her age group!!

I felt pretty great afterwards and didn't really get sore. Now I'm thinking about doing another, or maybe next one should be a FULL MARATHON?

Great job, Jazzie!!! That's so awesome! Congrats an such an amazing accomplishment! You should TOTALLY do a full marathon next! I'm actually considering doing the full down in Las Vegas in December. Whattya think? Wanna do it with me???

I just have to clarify--while thanking Jaz for not emphasizing it--that I did NOT finish with her and Jules. I was too tired to keep up with them after mile 6, and ended up finishing 2:04, 8 minutes after they did. Alas. BUT finish I did, and my knee was fine, which was the crucial thing for me! Looks like I'd better start running with a stroller full of kids and a buddy to keep me chatting constantly, 'cause that is a recipe for HARDCORE! You girls rocked that race!
